DiscernmentLast updated: November 2026Published by Soulpiphany

Is it my spirit guide or my own thoughts?

It is hard to tell because both arrive through the same awareness; discernment means trusting a consistent pattern, not one message.

Soulpiphany teaches that suddenness, warmth, brevity, or body sensations are observations, not proof of who sent a message. Reliable discernment comes from recognizing your own communication pattern over time and separating the message you received from the meaning you added. Doubt does not make communication false; it means the channel needs discernment.

Teal and gold threads tangle together, then separate into clear paths.
Discernment untangles the message you received from the meaning you added.

How do I know if it is my spirit guide talking to me?

You grow confident through a pattern that repeats, can be clarified with follow-up questions, and can be checked against lived experience. The question many people quietly ask, “did my guide say that, or did I make it up?”, is completely reasonable. Discernment is how you answer it honestly.

What an experience establishes, and what it leaves open

Soulpiphany's discernment distinctions, applied to four common experiences.
What you noticedWhat it establishesWhat remains uncertain
A sudden thoughtWhen it arrivedWho sent it
A calm or loving toneHow it feltIts source, since your own mind can be calm too
Chills, warmth, or tinglesThat you felt a sensationWhat caused it and what it means
A clear internal yesThe message: yesTiming, prediction, and the action you build on it

What is spiritual discernment?

Discernment, as Soulpiphany defines it, is the ability to evaluate the likely source and integrity of what you received without automatically believing it or automatically dismissing it. It is not cynicism, and it is not blind trust.

Responsible discernment includes:

  • a clear line between intentional communication and ordinary mental activity
  • your own recognizable signature, not a rule borrowed from someone else
  • separation between the original response and the interpretation added later
  • consistency across more than one emotionally convenient moment
  • evidence that can be checked against lived experience

The message is yes. Everything stacked on top of it is interpretation.

Why spirit guide checklists fail

You have probably seen lists like these: your mind is fearful while your guide is loving; your mind rambles while your guide is brief; your guide gives you chills. They promise instant certainty, but they swap one guessing game for another. Now you are grading whether a message was loving enough or tingly enough to qualify. Same uncertainty, better outfit.

Personal patterns can matter. Borrowed folklore is not a communication process. Read the full article, How to Know If It Is Your Spirit Guide or Your Own Thoughts, on soulpiphany.com.

How do I know my spirit guides are talking to me?

You can be more confident when you ask a question, receive a response you recognize, and can clarify it with a follow-up. Signs, chills, and sudden thoughts may be meaningful, but on their own they show presence at most. Soulpiphany teaches that dependable trust grows from a consistent personal pattern and checking what you received against real life.

Are chills or tingles a sign from spirit guides?

They can be part of spirit guide communication, and they can also simply be your nervous system. Soulpiphany's point is that a sensation does not interpret itself. Feeling a chill proves you felt a chill. Treat sensations as observations, note them, and look for whether they belong to a recognizable pattern that has earned your trust.

How do I know if I am channeling?

People use the word loosely. A practical test is whether you can open a deliberate exchange, receive something recognizable, and clarify it with follow-up questions across several sessions. If so, you have a channel worth developing. If experiences feel random or one-off, focus on structure and discernment before worrying about the label.

What are the signs that you are spiritually connected to someone?

People often describe a strong sense of recognition, ease, and understanding with someone. Those feelings are real experiences worth noticing. The same discernment Soulpiphany teaches for guides applies: separate what you felt from the story you add about what it means. This site focuses on connection with spirit guides rather than relationships between people.
